"Peacekeeping Among Sisters" by Eleanor Guinn

Matthew 5:1–12

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons [and daughters] of God” (Matthew 5:9).

It is hard to have one sister. It is very difficult to get along with two. And if they’re both younger, then it is an impossible task. Miriam and Laurel are often fighting with each other, as well as me. It’s never been easy to have peace with them. Our house is noisy, with lots of shouting, and arguing sometimes. And I just have wished sometimes that there was a way to enjoy them all the time.

In Matthew 5:9, it says, “You’re blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead of competing or fighting. That’s when you discover who you really are and your place in God’s family.” I was worried after I read this. I couldn’t keep peace. Was I blessed? Were my sisters?

People think they’re blessed when good things happen to them. But that’s not what they are. Blessings happen when you’re drawn nearer to God. Making peace draws me nearer to God. God is a peacekeeper.

It can be really vexing to have two little sisters. Miriam and Laurel can frustrate me so many times. But now I’ve read Matthew 5. And I will try to keep the peace.
