Some Bible scholars say one possible rendition of Jesus’ command to “…go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19) is, “…as you go, make disciples of all nations…” Jesus sends us out as we live our everyday lives with the command of giving wing to God’s dream. So…
As you go, commit to prayer
Through prayer we share our hearts with God and listen for God’s voice in our hearts. Regular prayer aligns our vision with God’s dream for the world. Prayer trains our eyes to recognize the world’s needs and emboldens us to follow God’s call to service.
As you go, pray for eyes to see the needs of others, hands to do God’s work, feet to go where God leads and a heart that loves as God loves.
As you go, pray for God’s people to advance God’s kingdom in our church, our community and our world.
As you go, commit to service
God sends us to meet the needs of others. Even Jesus was sent to serve, giving His life as a ransom for many. (Mark 10:45) To paraphrase Frederick Buechner, God sends us to the place where our deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet. Serving also requires sacrifice, a willingness to go out when we would rather stay in and looking to others’ needs when we would rather look to our own.
God has equipped you. As you go, serve.
As you go, commit to giving
When we give generously, we demonstrate our trust in the God who sends us out. Our gifts make it possible for Second Baptist to respond to God’s call. Just as we give to those who are sent out as global missionaries, our financial gifts support the equipping and sending out that happens right where we live. From our abundance, we give where it is needed.
God has provided. As you go, give.
Missions
Missions – that’s at the heart of what Second Baptist is all about. We understand God’s mission for bringing all of creation into fellowship with God and with one another. We know the work of the church must be as focused as our innermost yearnings and as expansive as all of creation.
We belong. We believe. We become. We affirm that the gospel still speaks to the deep need of people to have a personal relationship with God. As we seek to meet God at work in the world, we form local and global partnerships that
model Christ’s example of caring relationships
anticipate mutual growth
use asset-based community development processes
provide for long-term sustainability
The SEND Initiative
Since its inception in 2013, 2BC’s SEND Initiative has fostered the congregation’s participation in missions experiences around Liberty, throughout the US, and abroad. The goal of SEND is to know Christ and to make Christ known in ways which honor God and the love Jesus demonstrated for each individual.
It is our prayer that every member of Second Baptist Church commits to at least one challenging and rewarding place of service each year. For many, that may be through participation in a mission process. Members who elect to participate in a new type/location of mission engagement may be eligible for financial assistance from SEND funds.
Contact our Missions Coordinator at 816-781-2824 or by email if you are interested or would like more information about any of the mission opportunities or financial assistance.
Ongoing Partnerships and Local Missions
IN AS MUCH MINISTRIES | Ongoing
This thriving Liberty food bank had its origins in the hearts and actions of Second Baptist Church members. To provide relief for local families in crisis, 2BC collects designated food items on the first Sunday of each month. Also, church members help with on-going special events and periodic deep cleaning of the food pantry at the Freedom House.
IN AS MUCH MINISTRIES PLUS (IAM+) | Ongoing
To assist local families in becoming self-sufficient following times of crisis, 2BC volunteers lead in specific rehabilitation and development processes, such as counseling regarding alternatives to payday lending and preparing healthy, cost-effective meals.
SCHOOL CONNECTION TEAM | Ongoing
This team connects with Schumacher Elementary and other schools as needed to serve as a support and encouragement for the work of the teachers and staff. The team meets as is necessary for planning and as opportunities require.
HILLCREST HOPE THRIFT STORE | Ongoing
The Hillcrest Hope Thrift Store supports the transformation happening every day at Hillcrest Hope. All proceeds from the Thrift Store exclusively support Hillcrest Hope, raising funds for these families in Clay County. Store donations contribute to the practical needs of the families during their stay in the program, as well as aid the families as they seek their housing upon graduation.
Shopping Hours: Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm
Donation Hours: Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm
CASEWORKERS | Ongoing
Clients at some local homeless shelters are permitted to leave the shelters with the pillowcases they used the night before. 2BC volunteers donate fabric or sew quality pillowcases which the shelters can give to their residents. CaseWorkers work on their schedules from their homes.
BOOKS ON MISSION
Books of the sort that might be found in a pastor’s library (Bibles, concordances, Bible study books, atlases, Sunday School literature, hymnals, books on church organization and administration, etc.) are donated for developing seminary and church libraries abroad.
Working with the Fellowship of Baptist Educators (FOBE), 2BC takes books to Eubank, Kentucky where they are processed and packaged for shipment. Most shipments go to India, South America or one of the African nations but the exact destination for each shipment is not finalized until near the time for shipment. It costs about 50 cents per pound to ship materials in the containers, so donors may also contribute about $1 per book to defray shipping costs.
"HI, NEIGHBOR!" | Four times per year
"Hi, Neighbor!" Team members deliver information about church activities and ministries to our immediate neighbors during Lent, before Vacation Bible School, before Fall school opening, and for Advent. This partnership provides opportunities for church members to help create a welcoming presence for the church’s nearest neighbors.
LIBERTY FALL FESTIVAL HOSPITALITY TEAM
Second Baptist has found a presence in the Liberty Fall Festival each year at the end of September by offering free shuttle service and opening the Welcome Center on Saturday for restrooms and refreshment. Golf cart drivers and Welcome Center greeters communicate 2BC’s love for the community.
REBUILDING TOGETHER KANSAS CITY
During this annual workday, volunteers help repair or make improvements to a home for elderly or disabled residents who need a helping hand. Light carpentry and clean up skills needed. More information can be obtained here.
2BC CHRISTMAS STORE | Help Needed in November & December
All ages are welcome to help with this unique store for providing identified families in our community with the opportunity to provide Christmas for their families at a reduced cost by “shopping” at Second Baptist. Church members donate new gifts which identified families could purchase at greatly reduced cost. There are multiple ways to participate for people of all ages. Watch our events page for this year's dates.
SECOND BAPTIST TEAM WORLD VISION
Second Baptist runners participate in the October 19 KC Full Marathon + Half Marathon. Serious runners as well as just-for-the-fun-of-it joggers who want to support a worthy cause, enlist sponsors to raise funds for Team World Vision, a Christian organization which supports children’s ministries around the world. They assist with getting ready for the run, fundraising, and more. A Second Baptist group practices together for several months before the event. Visit this website to learn more.
TABLE OF FAITHS
Table of Faiths is an annual event sponsored by the Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council. In these ever-changing times, understanding people of different faith traditions and other backgrounds is a necessity to create and maintain harmony in our community. The Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council is committed to building the most welcoming community for all people.
2BC ANNIVERSARY SERVE SUNDAY
§ Every year, on the 2BC Anniversary Sunday (the first Sunday in May), the whole church gathers for a joint service then moves out into the community for service projects. Church members perform all kinds of loving acts of service then gather for an all-church picnic.
