Keeping Watch by Drew Kingery

But the exact day and hour? No one knows that…

(Matthew 24:36 The Message)

The alarm goes off early like it has for years. Sue rises quietly so as not to disturb the “Old Hon.” Bootsy, the cat, follows her downstairs to the kitchen, wondering if “Mom” will let him outside.

She goes about fixing a light breakfast and some coffee, wary of the plastic spider that may be lurking about in an unknown place. It is a game she and the “Old Hon” have been playing for some time. No spider this time.

After the coffee is ready, she checks the rain gauge as it rained during the night. Then she heads to the computer with a spring in her step and a sense of anticipation and hope. Maybe today is the day! She sits down and fires up the computer. With Bootsy winding his way around her feet she waits and wonders. Will there be a story from David about singing new songs? A story from Christy about us all being people of worth? Perhaps there will be a story from Jen and Caroline about getting the perfect gift and giving joyfully to those we love. Maybe even a story from Emmitt, her newest writer.

As she scrolls down through the emails, a hint of disappointment creeps in. Nothing. She shuts down the computer, disappointed, yet with the faith, tomorrow WILL bring stories to her inbox for this year’s Advent Guide.

The alarm goes off early like it has for years. Sue rises quietly….

With an air of excitement, faith, and hope, we anticipate the coming of the Son of Man. We don’t know the hour. So, we watch, living our lives the way the Father has commanded. We keep watching believing that one day, He will come. What a glorious day that will be!
