"Holding Fast" by Laura Rodgers
“Only let us hold fast to what we have attained” (Philippians 3:16).
The theme of our Advent booklet and church focus this year is perfect. It feels even more so than in past years. For in this year of completely unexpected turns, I think we realize that peace is all we have—really.
In the key verse I selected, Paul encourages Philippi people to hold fast to what they have attained. We might first think he is referring to the tangible things we have acquired. But this year especially, we need to hold fast to those intangible gifts all around us in order to keep the peace—yes, in order to keep us sane.
I have spent so many days since March sitting on my deck. Sometimes it has been in the glowing sun and warm breeze, allowing me to linger for hours. Sometimes I have sat on damp cushions with a chilling wind that quickly forces me to give up and go inside. But, in the fifteen years we’ve lived in our house, I have never used my deck as much as this year. I’ve been so thankful for it. I have fought to keep ahead of the spiders, wasps, wood bees, squirrels, an opossum, and other insects and creatures that try to take it over. I have shared it with hummingbirds and songbirds who seem to have sweetly flown closer than ever before. It’s been important to me to maintain that sanctuary for myself and for a safe space to be with my family and friends to keep the in-person contact that I need and treasure, especially this year.
So as the holidays approach and our time of uncertainty continues, I hope to hold fast to what I have attained. My family in my warm house. The beauty of the earth around me. My friends and family both near and far. Memories of holidays spent in past traditions—new ways to celebrate together for a temporary time.
I know you will join me. Peace to you all.
