12 Traits of Christian Leadership by Amy Duncan

In January 2023, the Leadership Development Committee surveyed Christian leaders from our church membership and beyond, asking them to identify traits they felt were key to leadership with a Christ-like focus.

We reached out to leaders in all types of positions, both spiritual and secular. Through a series of focus groups and careful consideration, we distilled the large list down to these 12 words.

  • commitment

  • vision

  • spiritual growth

  • openness

  • courage

  • discernment

  • wisdom

  • grace

  • respectfulness

  • humility

  • compassion

  • integrity

Our hope is that leaders in all situations, from classrooms to board rooms, from youth sports teams to community clubs, in church settings and in the secular world, in our homes and in our workplaces, will find inspiration and guidance when considering these words. Related Scripture verses and examples can be found in an expanded brochure in the Welcome Center.

Our belief is that Jesus taught his people not just to live but also how to lead. In the words of Paul: “. . . If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. . .” Romans 12:8 (NLT)

Any leader may possess these traits. However, leaders who identify as Christian and manifest the traits can strengthen God’s kingdom. The opposite is true as well. When leaders known to be Christian are lacking in grace, compassion, integrity, etc., this can be damaging to God’s kingdom.

The Leadership Development Committee believes these words can have a variety of uses and applications, and we hope that they will take on a life of their own, much like the 12 Character Traits in the Liberty Public School District.

They may be inspirational to individuals for private reflection. They could be the focus of lessons in a series or spread out over months for Bible study groups. They could be spotlighted in sermons, church communications, or retreats. Our prayer is that they will be meaningful for years to come.
