Striving for Peace by Blane Baker

. . . eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:3

In Paul’s message to the Ephesians, he urges them to walk according to their calling as followers of Christ. This new life in Christ includes cultivating personal traits and embracing unity. We are compelled to love one another in ways that transcend our citizenship, families of origin, race, culture, orientations, and traditions. We are challenged to treat folks gently and to show humility in our actions. Love demands that we display patience and kindness. The Spirit empowers us to remain united in our bonds of peace. According to Paul, we are united by one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God of all. Despite differences as people, we are one in Christ.

As we strive for peace this season, I am reminded of my relationship with my younger sister, Laura. Born 2.5 years apart, she and I were nearly inseparable for the first few years of our lives. Since childhood, we have enjoyed a lifetime of friendship and mutual support. According to family stories, though, I was not impressed with a new member of the family when she was first born. With some encouragement, however, I soon enjoyed her presence.

Even as a little baby, she watched me intently as I played with my toys nearby. Later, she followed me everywhere around our yard and neighborhood. Once we were old enough to have separate friends, we maintained our strong ties. Over the years, we have experienced many joyful times together, along with the heartaches of life. Sometimes we have different opinions and views, but our underlying commitment is to maintain a spirit of love and unity and a bond of peace. To that end, we have been faithful.

As we celebrate the wonder of Advent, we understand that peace is not just the absence of strife and contention. Peace comes from an overwhelming desire to embrace our unity in Christ, solve problems together, and love one another without condition. This season I pray that peace will unfold at every turn for you and your loved ones and for people across the world.
