Psalm 113

The Lord’s name is to be praised. (Psalm 113:2)

Going away to college or moving to a new place often causes us to evaluate our relationships and to appreciate the importance of being present. In the fall of 1982, I headed to William Jewell College to begin my undergraduate college career. My excitement was balanced by knowing that college life was more challenging than what I had experienced previously in high school. Professors expected students to prepare for classes and to study regularly. I wanted to meet those expectations but had not yet developed those skills.

My first few weeks as a college student were an amazing experience of growth. I learned valuable study habits, developed friendships, grew in my spiritual life, and connected with several lifetime mentors. I enjoyed every day and treasured every interaction. Midterm exams and Thanksgiving Break came quickly, and suddenly we were finishing the last two weeks of classes before final exams began. While preparing diligently for finals, I did not think much about going home to see family or celebrating Christmas. After finishing my last exam and packing my bag, I headed home feeling both thrilled and relieved.

When I arrived later that day, my sister and brothers were still at school. Mom was baking sugar and spice cookies, and the tree was decorated and ready for Christmas. That evening we sat around the table enjoying our meal and sharing stories. A few days later, we celebrated Christmas together as a family. Everything for me that Christmas was special—the baked goods and delicious food, the decorations, the time with family, and the Christmas services over that holiday season.

Being present that Christmas was very meaningful after being away from home. I cherished that time and remembered those feelings of being present long after my first year in college. In Psalm 113, the writer encourages us to praise God who is full of glory and who actively and humbly seeks to help those who are struggling. As you celebrate God’s love (hopefully in person), treasure your time together, savor each moment, and praise God who is with us still.
