Sunday morning groups meet weekly from 10:00–10:45 a.m. These gatherings provide a steady place to study Scripture, reflect on faith, and form meaningful connections. All are welcome, and there is a group for every interest and life stage.
All young adults are invited to join our Young Adult Small Group for friendship and community.
This group consists of persons interested in Christian faith as it encounters contemporary culture. We read books on topics with a view to processing such ideas through the eyes of informed faith.
Our class name reflects our belief that we are all still in formation. We base our discussion and exploration on the texts appointed by the Christian Lectionary. Most of our members are in their 30’s, 40’s, or 50’s, but adults of any age are welcome. We are a warm and supportive group, and we also meet outside class a few times each year for social gatherings.
Soul Food is a community group of Bible study and growing friendships. Our curriculum is the Bible and the conversations that happen around the tables. We always have delicious refreshments and laugh out loud throughout the hour.
The Seekers Class seeks to grow in understanding and applying scripture, increasing our outreach to others, and building community. We use the Baptists Today Bible study material. Most of us are middle-aged couples and singles. We begin with the Bible study material, including plenty of—sometimes vigorous—discussion. At 10:30, we begin a time of sharing.
The Tanner Class is an engaged group that enjoys discussion and dialogue. We use the Baptists Today material to provide background for each lesson. Conversations then emerge, and we generally explore how Bible study impacts our daily lives. The group is composed mostly of retired persons.
The Winepress Class examines biblical texts, poses questions, and explores cultural and personal viewpoints as we seek to connect more deeply with Christ. Each week, we’ll try to apply what we’ve learned from the scriptures and each other. All are welcome, no matter your age, background, or level of biblical knowledge.
Adult life at Second Baptist extends far beyond Sunday mornings. Community groups provide spaces for study, service, and friendship throughout the week.
This group gathers after worship in the Welcome Center and picks a restaurant for lunch! Look for Harold and Gwen Phillips, Steve Hemphill, or Bill and Becky Gossett. No sign-up necessary; just meet us in the Welcome Center!
Our Women’s Bible Study Group meets weekly and studies a variety of faith topics. New members are welcome!
Our Book Club meets monthly on Thursdays at 7 p.m. in the Welcome Center. We read a different book each month and gather to discuss it. All are welcome!
We are pleased to be a partner church of the William Jewell College Center for Faith and Culture. As a partner, we host Personal Flourishing Classes through the fall, winter, and spring. These classes are free to our congregation. For more information and list of classes, click here.
Our senior adults meet twice monthly for good coffee and great conversation. All are welcome and no registration is required.
Our Women on Mission group meets monthly. We hear from an engaging speaker and typically complete a service project together. All women are welcome and no registration is required.
All men are welcome to join us for our monthly Men’s Breakfast. We enjoy great food, conversation, and friendship. No registration is required, and we meet from September through April..
In addition to ongoing groups, Second Baptist hosts short-term “pop-up” studies throughout the year. These typically meet for 4–6 weeks around a specific book or topic.
We also offer opportunities for adults to gather throughout the year outside of Bible study and small groups. Every summer, we host Adult VBS—a four-day experience including Bible study, workshops, and a fun field trip. Additionally, we offer all-church retreats focused on a specific topic for learning and spiritual growth.
Our monthly Second Wednesdays gatherings are a regular anchor for our adults and children. We gather once a month for dinner together and a time to be with one another in welcoming community.
