Leading the Jesus Way: The Character of Christian Leadership
Yesterday we began a new sermon series, Leading the Jesus Way: The Character of Christian Leadership. In 2023, our Leadership Development Committee listened to leaders inside and beyond our congregation and identified twelve traits connected to Christlike leadership: spiritual growth, integrity, wisdom, discernment, vision, courage, openness, respectfulness, grace, compassion, humility, and commitment. Over the course of the summer, we’ll explore these traits through scripture, beginning with Jesus’ call to be salt and light. Together, we’ll consider how Christ forms his character in us, for our own growth, for the church’s witness, and for the sake of the world God loves. An expanded brochure with related Scripture verses and examples was passed out during worship yesterday. If you weren’t there, you can grab a brochure in the Welcome Center. We look forward to learning about the words with you this summer!
For some extra context and background, here’s some information that the Leadership Development Committee shared when the words were launched in early 2024.
Why Do We Need the List of Words?
The Leadership Development Committee’s hope was that leaders in all situations, from classrooms to board rooms, from youth sports teams to community clubs, in church settings and in the secular world, in our homes and in our workplaces, would find inspiration and guidance when considering these words. The committee’s belief was that Jesus taught his people not just to live but also how to lead. In the words of Paul: “. . . If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. . .” Romans 12:8 (NLT) Any leader may possess these traits. However, leaders who identify as Christian and manifest the traits can strengthen God’s kingdom. The opposite is true as well. When leaders known to be Christian are lacking in grace, compassion, integrity, etc., this can be damaging to God’s kingdom.
How Can We Use These Words?
The Leadership Development Committee believed these words could have a variety of uses and applications, and their hope was and is that they would take on a life of their own, much like the 12 Character Traits in the Liberty Public School District. They may be inspirational to individuals for private reflection. They could be the focus of lessons in a series or spread out over months for Bible study groups. They could be spotlighted in church communications or retreats. The Leadership Development Committee’s prayer was and still is that they will be meaningful for years to come.
