Opportunities abound to exercise your unique gifts and abilities at Second Baptist and at the same time strengthen this faith community.  Caring for each other, groups working on specific ministry tasks, helping around the church, or making sure all are greeted with a smile, whatever you desire to add to the vision of this faith community is welcome.


2BC Events Team:

Planners and Organizers; Set-up and Tear-down Crews; Decorating Teams

Audio Team:

Description:   Provide the setup and operation of sound equipment for Sunday Worship and other special events.

Children’s Ministry:

Description: Areas where people can serve by working with children.

Church Archives:

Description: This team collects, cares for, and interprets to the congregation materials related to the history of Second Baptist Church

Service Opportunities:

  • Maintain displays in the cases in the Assembly Room.

  • Read and file materials from church events and the office.

  • Compile information about some areas of church life, such as youth ministry, music, Sunday School customs through the years, memorial gifts, etc.

  • Special Need: Eleanor is looking for someone who could assume leadership of this ministry

College Ministry:

Description: Ministry with and alongside college-age people.

English as a Second Language:

Description: We offer English classes for those wanting to learn conversational English.

Service Opportunities:

  • Working one on one with a student for one hour each week

  • Volunteers who would enjoy being a friend to an ESL student

Good Shepherds:

Description: The primary function of our Good Shepherd team is to minister to senior members of our congregation and provide a link between the congregation and those who cannot attend church services on a regular basis.  Good Shepherds are volunteers who help Second Baptist stay in contact with homebound and care center members once a week.

Service Opportunities:

  • Through phone calls, letters or personal visits, this friendly contact helps those unable to regularly participate stay connected to our faith family

  • Volunteer a day per month or two a month to assist with this caring ministry

Greater Liberty Interfaith Pairs:

Description: 2BC member/friend paired for seven online conversations with a person of  another faith using provided questions  to write the story of their pair, then to meet at  William Jewell College on Tuesday, May 1st to be honored as a World Class Person, able to go anyplace at anytime and talk to anyone about anything and feel safe.

Service Opportunities:

  • We pair three times a year: January 9th-May 1st;  May 8th- Sept 4th; Sept. 11-Dec. 11th, a different class of no more than 20 each time.  Our goal is to make a friend of another faith.

  • Each is paired for 12 weeks. Word of mouth from pairs draws new pairs

Hands On! 2.0:

Description: HandsOn! meets twice each month and provides friends time to gather and work on projects (mostly knitting and crocheting) and keep up with each other and our lives. It is a proven way to get to know acquaintances better and truly become friends.

Service Opportunities:

  • If you have an interest in providing hand-knitted dishcloths or prayer shawls or scarves, etc., we can absolutely find someone who will benefit from your generosity. It is not necessary to be a part of the group to take advantage of these opportunities.

Harvest Hill Community Garden:

Description: The garden is an excellent opportunity for families or anyone to help prepare the garden for planting, planting and tending the garden through the summer in addition to harvesting the fresh vegetables.

Service Opportunities:

  • * Help is needed to keep the garden clean and in top shape.

  • * Second Baptist secures two gardens spots to raise vegetables for In As Much Ministries

Description: We are here to provide a warm and welcoming environment to visitors, guest, and the family of 2BC.

Service Opportunities:

  • Sunday morning greeters for the Welcome Center, Worship services, parking lots

  • Coffee bar host, Election Day host, special events, funerals, etc.

Many Hands Fair Trade Shop:

Description: We are a ministry that sells certified Fair Trade merchandise providing training, and fair wages, hope for their future. Open March through December on Saturdays and Fourth Fridays.

Service Opportunities:

  • Anyone who is breathing can help with the shop any Saturday.

Marketing and Communications:

Description: This team will assist with print and online communications and marketing for 2BC.

Service Opportunities:

  • Blog writers on specific topics

  • Photographers--both event and for special needs

  • Videographers

  • Those with Marketing experience

  • Writers to take pictures of new members

  • Editors/proofreaders

Media Team:

Description: Provides webcasting videos in a variety of venues for 2BC. Media.

Missions Committee:

Description: The Missions Committee engages in holistic mission partnerships on behalf of Second  Baptist  Church.

Service Opportunities:

  • Join a mission team: Thailand, South Dakota, School Connections, Haiti

  • As needed for local and national mission work

MOPS (Mothers Of Pre-Schoolers):

Description: MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) International provides social and spiritual support to mothers of children ages 0 through Kindergarten. Our MOPS group here at 2BC is made up of around 90 moms and 15 mentor moms. We meet monthly for speakers, crafts, and social time. Children are cared for during this time, and participate in the MOPS Kids curriculum. Families are also active throughout the month with playdates, service projects, Moms Nights Out, and other family events. MOPS is open to all moms of preschoolers in our community, and scholarships are available if there is financial need.

Service Opportunities:

  • We are always so thankful to have more volunteer childcare providers for MOPS on the first Friday morning of the month!

  • A one-time commitment would be to join our substitute childcare provider list. You would be called if we have a worker call in sick, and you would provide childcare for 2 1/2 hours on a MOPS Friday morning.  This could be a volunteer position or a paid position.

Description: There are many ways to serve through the music and worship at Second Baptist Church.

Service Opportunities:

  • Choirs: Children’s choirs, Student Choir, Sanctuary Choir, Ensembles  (Sing, accompany, or lead)

  • Handbells: beginning through advanced levels

  • Instrumentalists: pianists/accompanists, small ensembles, orchestra - 9th grade and above

  • Help with the music library

Rebuilding Together Clay County:

Description: Providing home repair services to those in need

  • The first Saturday in October is always the big build day!

  • Rebuilding Together is always looking for those that can help.

Safety & Security Team:

Description: To help provide a safe environment for worship and events at Second Baptist Church.

  • Having a visible presence of the Safety & Security Team at worship services and events.

School Connections Team:

Description: The School Connections Team partners with Lillian Schumacher Elementary School in the Liberty School District. The purpose of the team is to provide support and encouragement to the students, staff, and administration at Schumacher. We assist in the meeting of immediate basic needs of Schumacher families and work with staff and PTA to generate ideas concerning this partnership.

Service Opportunities:

  • Participating in the after school clubs we sponsor or contributing to any of our requested donations.

  • Watch for "Shark Alerts" in 2BC media resource for opportunities to serve.

Second Baptist Welcome Center Desk:

Description: Welcome all guest with a smile, answer phones or questions they may have regarding our church.

Service Opportunities:

  • "Your smile is needed." 

  • We are always in search of volunteers to sit at the Welcome Desk and be a warm smile!

Second Friends Preschool:

Description: Begun in 1994, Second Friends is a social preschool with a theme based curriculum. It is integrated into learning centers and group activities. It is our hope to build a foundation for children who will always love to learn and create, who are not afraid to make mistakes, who are aware of Jesus and his life, and who enjoy being a part of a community of friends.

Second hope Assistance Program:

Description: To offer the working poor a financial alternative to predatory loans.

South Dakota Missions Team:

Description: Partnering with CBF Field Personnel and Reservation leaders in Bridger, South Dakota on the Lakota Reservation.

Standing Committees:

Description: Four standing committees of the church. (Financial Stewardship, Leadership Development, Missions, Personnel).

Service Opportunities:

  • New nominees every year

  • Appointments to standing committees are usually a three-year commitment and are approved by the Church at quarterly Church Conference.

Stephen Ministry:

Description: Confidential, caring Christian Ministry, providing one-on-one care and support to individuals going through difficult times.

Service Opportunities:

  • The key of this ministry is a long term commitment, which leads to life-changing experiences and lasting relationships.

  • Stephen Ministers build relationships over a period of time.

Thailand Team:

Description: This is a growing partnership between us and others in the Kansas City area and the Upland Holistic Development Project in Thailand.

The Christmas Store:

Description: We provide a Christmas shopping experience for Clay County families who may find it difficult to purchase gifts for their children.

Service Opportunities:

  • There are many opportunities to help during The Store in December.

  • We are looking for individuals to help with grant writing and merchant/store connections.
