Servant Song by Neita Geliker

Isaiah 42:1-9

I am God. I have called you to live right and well…and provided you as a lighthouse to the nations (Isaiah 42:6 The Message Bible).

This passage is one of four “Servant Songs” in Isaiah in which God recognizes Israel as His servant with whom He has a special relationship and to whom He gives a special assignment. God had called out Israel as special and had protected them to be a blessing
to the world.

As Christians, we are called to take up that mantle—You will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, all over Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth (Acts 1:8). Second Baptist has embraced that mandate in many ways as the church reaches out to the world.

In Liberty (our Jerusalem), our members—including our youth— witness as they support In As Much Ministry, Meals on Wheels, Love INC, Hillcrest Hope, Rebuilding Kansas City Together, the Christmas Store, and, most recently, Many Hands Fair Trade Shop.

In 2000, we committed to working through the CBF initiative, “Partners in Hope” with some of the poorest communities in the country. In Helena, AR, folks shared books and games and assisted with the development of a community building. Additionally, many members served in Joplin following the 2011 tornado there.

We then moved to Bridger, South Dakota, on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, another of the poorest areas. Our over-20-year commitment there has paid off with a trusting relationship.

Internationally, members have served in Belarus, Haiti, Nigeria, Romania, Slovakia, and at the Upland Holistic Development Project in northern Thailand. Each “missionary” has returned with powerful stories to share and a renewed commitment to service.

I am proud to be a member of a church with a generous budget for missions and a broad outreach. I am grateful that Jason and Christy provide additional inspiration having served in Mali, Thailand, and France before coming to Second Baptist.

For wonderful stories about our missions outreach, see our new history book, “I’ll Second That.”
